Ana-María Alarcón-Jiménez
AMAJ I hold a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. My dissertation explored Galician musical practices in Ortigueira, Galicia, with a focus on the social dynamics surrounding the International Festival of the Celtic World of Ortigueira. My research examines the intersections of music, power, and space, as well as themes of music aesthetics, amplification, and resistance.
I served as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Ethnomusicology (INET) at Universidade Nova de Lisboa from 2011 to 2016 and co-founded the Group of Ethnomusicology of the Catalan Institute of Anthropology. I later held a Junior Research position with the ARTSOUNDSCAPES Project at the University of Barcelona (2019–2021) and continued as a María Zambrano Senior Researcher at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (2022-2024).
In 2021, I was honored with the prestigious Premis Barcelona Grant to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on musical practices in Barcelona. I studied Ethnomusicology and Latin American Studies at the University of California, San Diego, and the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. My work has been published in leading journals, including Ethnomusicology Forum and History and Anthropology.
ANACRÓNICA In the creative side, I am interested in sound art, electroacoustic music, new and experimental music. I play the bassoon and enjoy finding new techniques to play it and diversify its sound palette.
